Raroa Music Centre (RMC) is a music initiative through the Ministry of Education aimed for students aged 5-12 years old and offers tuition in 10 different instruments from beginner to advanced level, and five general music classes - music basics, choir, guitar ensemble, orchestra, and ukulele group. All lessons are held in groups with the children starting together at the beginning of the year. Our teachers and relievers are all police-vetted, established music teachers and professional musicians in the Greater Wellington Region. Classes are on Saturdays between 9am and 1:30pm at Raroa Normal Intermediate School, Haumia Street, Johnsonville.
Raroa takes enrolments at the beginning of each year and cannot grant mid-year acceptance.
COURSE & SKILL LEVEL INFORMATION
For more detailed information regarding our general and instrumental courses on offer, please see our RMC Skill Level Guidelines.
The age limits for courses ensure the children are old enough to work together with other students, and to work with the teacher. Physical stature is also very important - if a student is petite, we may still suggest they wait a year or two regardless of age so as to prevent injury from playing an instrument too big for the student.
For students who are keen to learn a second instrument, we suggest for them to focus on their first instrument for at least a year before learning an additional instrument. We also encourage students to participate in one Level 1 instrument at a time and partake in a general music class, such as choir, orchestra or ukulele group, simultaneously.
